On October 17 at 11 a.m., Wendell Falls, a master-planned community in eastern Wake County, will host a ground-breaking ceremony to launch construction on one of the longest trail systems in Wake County. Developed in partnership with Triangle Off-Road Cyclists (TORC), the trails will span the undeveloped 1,400 acres of Wendell Falls, yielding up to 10 miles of public hiking and biking trails.

“This new trail system is part of our long-term commitment to create opportunities for our community to pursue healthy, active lifestyles,” said Shannon McSwiney, marketing director, Newland Communities. “Located just a short 15-minute drive from downtown Raleigh, the trails will provide an accessible course for outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels.”

Wendell Falls also has plans to connect its trail system to the Capital Area Greenway System, potentially adding up to 10 additional miles of trails for riders. The terrain will accommodate a variety of activities, including hiking, mountain biking and casual outdoor exploration. The first mile of trails will be available for public use as early as spring 2016.

“It’s extremely rare to find a single location with so many miles of trails,” said David Houskeeper, president, TORC. “The length and variety of this multi-use system will make Wendell Falls a travel destination for a wide range of visitors across the state, from bikers to bird-watchers.”

Wendell Falls and TORC plan to host a series of ongoing events in 2016 that will be open to the public, including formal races and casual riding or walking clubs. Interested visitors may also tour the model homes and amenities at Wendell Falls. Similar to Briar Chapel, an award-winning sister community located in Chapel Hill, Wendell Falls features green-certified homes and amenities, complemented by approximately two million square feet of commercial-retail space, open spaces and public parks.

Wendell Falls is owned in a joint venture between NORTH AMERICA SEKISUI HOUSE LLC (NASH), the US business unit and full subsidiary of SEKISUI HOUSE Ltd, Japan’s largest homebuilder and leading diversified developer, and AMERICAN NEWLAND COMMUNITIES, LLC, whose development business, Newland Communities, is the master developer of Wendell Falls. It is one of more than 30 assets the NASH-Newland partnership owns or manages together, in 12 states across the US.
